2007 FREEDOM CONFERENCE SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Elimination Game: Wilkes University 5, Delaware Valley College 0
EDWARDSVILLE (PA) - Delaware Valley College's season to remember
came to an end on Saturday morning as the fourth-seeded Aggies suffered
a 5-0 loss to No. 2 Wilkes University in the elimination game of
the 2007 Freedom Conference Softball Championships.
The loss, combined with a 4-3 setback to King's College in Friday's
opening round, knocked Delaware Valley out of the double-elimination
tournament. However, the early exit does not take anything from
what head coach Rich Matarese and his young squad (no seniors among
the 20 players on the roster) accomplished this year.
The Aggies were picked to finish seventh in the eight-team preseason
conference coaches' poll, but they raced out to a perfect 4-0 start
in Freedom play. They finished 16-14 overall (8-6 and fourth place
in Freedom) for their first winning season since 1995 (17-13), the
second-highest, single-season winning total in program history and
the first conference postseason berth since 1987.
On Saturday morning, Delaware Valley could not touch All-American
pitcher Laurie Agresti as the Wilkes senior recorded a two-hit shutout
and fanned 12 batters. Agresti, who on Friday became just the fifth
player in Division III history to go over the 1,000-strikeout plateau
for a career, allowed a single to Maureen Ferguson in the third
inning and a single to Kim Harle in the sixth. She hit one batter,
walked none and did not allow an Aggie get into scoring position
in the game.
The Lady Colonels (22-12) scored all of the runs they would need
in the third inning as Gina Stefanelli singled and Melisa Bracone
followed with a two-run homer, her third of the season. Wilkes then
put the game away in the sixth with three runs off of three hits
and a pair of Delaware Valley errors. The big blow was a two-run
single by Julie Henry.
Jennifer Bummer took the loss for the Aggies as she went six innings
and allowed five runs (two earned) and six hits. The junior struck
out seven batters, leaving her with 69 on the season and just one
shy of tying the school record.
