ANNVILLE
(PA) - Delaware Valley College saw its record-tying, six-game winning
streak come to an end as Lebanon Valley College swept a non-conference
doubleheader from the Aggies. The Flying Dutchmen posted a 3-2,
nine-inning victory in the opener and followed with a 10-1 triumph
in the nightcap.
The losses dropped Delaware Valley to 11-3 on the season and it
prevented them from topping the consecutive-victory record that
it shares with the 1987 squad. Lebanon Valley upped its mark to
10-6 with the wins.
Down 2-0 in the sixth, Delaware Valley rallied as Kelly Andrews
opened with a single and Nicole Dorney reached on an error. After
a strikeout, freshman Bethany Pavlik ripped a triple to right field
to score pinch-runner Arielle Forsyth and Dorney to tie the game.
It stayed that way into extra innings. In the ninth inning, a runner
is automatically placed on second to start the stanza. The Aggies
moved Pavlik to third on a sacrifice, but failed to bring her home.
Lebanon Valley's half of the inning saw Lauren Sanford advance to
third on a bunt and then score the game-winning run on Amy Batz's
single to center.
Andrews led Delaware Valley with a 3-for-4 effort. Dorney went 2-for-3
while Pavlik was 1-for-4 with the two-run triple. Kirstyn Ruhling
started on the mound and went five-plus innings, allowing no earned
runs (two earned). Jennifer Bummer went the rest of the way and
suffered the loss.
Jenn Roberts went the full nine innings for the Flying Dutchmen
and allowed two runs (one earned) and seven hits while striking
out 16. Batz led the offense with a 3-for-5 showing.
It was all Lebanon Valley in the second game as it scored three
runs in the first, three runs over the next two innings and four
more in the fourth. The game was called after five innings due to
the eight-run mercy rule.
The Aggies' lone run came in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Bummer
which scored Nancy Kauffman. Dorney was 2-for-2 with a double. Nikki
Zimmerman started and took the loss.
