DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Laurie Agresti
and Samantha Evanich recorded complete-game shutouts as Wilkes University opened
Freedom Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader from host Delaware Valley College,
8-0 and 7-0. The first game ended after five innings due to the eight-run mercy
rule. The Lady Colonels improved to 6-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference
while the Aggies fell to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the Freedom. In the opener,
Agresti came within two outs of a no-hitter but Kristin Lup broke up the bid with
a clean infield single. The two-time all-region honoree then retired the next
batters, including her ninth strikeout of the day, to complete the one-hitter. Wilkes
scored once in the second and two in the fourth to build a 3-0 advantage. The
Lady Colonels then put the game away with five runs off of seven hits and one
Aggie error in the fifth. The big blow was two-run double by Evanich. Evanich
and Julie Henry each finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Sarah Miller was a perfect
3-for-3 with two RBIs. Evanich followed Agresti's performance with a three-hit
shutout of her own. She walked two and fanned four in the seven innings. It was
1-0 ballgame until the fifth inning when the Lady Colonels tallied three runs
on four hits, including an RBI double by Kathy Dalton and a run-scoring triple
by Nadine Taylor. Wilkes then put the contest away in the sixth as Evanich
walked and Jan Nunemacher singled. Erin Plank then delivered a three-run homer
over the left field fence for a 7-0 advantage. Plank was 2-for-3 with two runs
scored and three RBIs while Taylor finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Stephanie
Sedeyn, Robyn Jackson and Kelly Andrews had singles for Delaware Valley, all coming
in the third inning as the Aggies loaded the bases with two outs. However Evanich
got out of the jam with a ground out. |
