Widener University 5, Delaware Valley 4 (Game 1)
Delaware Valley 6, Widener University 5 (Game 2 - 8 innings)

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - The Delaware Valley College softball team opened the home portion of its schedule by splitting a non-conference doubleheader with Widener University. The Aggies dropped a 5-4 decision in the opener, but came back to take the nightcap, 6-5 in eight innings.

Delaware Valley, which had a four-game winning streak heading into Thursday's action, moved its record to 5-6 while the Pioneers remained at .500 with a 5-5 mark.

The second game went into extra innings and Widener failed to score in the top half of the eighth inning. Pinch-runner Maureen Ferguson was placed on second base - as per softball's extra-inning rules - to start the bottom of the half of the inning for the Aggies. Ferguson moved to third as Lacy Miles reached base on a bunt single. After a pop-out, pinch-hitter Katie Shallcross hit a grounder to third base. Ferguson broke for home and the throw from third hit her and went out of play for the game-winning run.

Stephanie Sedeyn went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Delaware Valley while Kim Harle scored two runs and knocked in one. Kirstyn Ruhling improved to 2-2 and she went the full eight innings and allowed five runs (three earned) and nine hits while striking out three.

Krista Cesarine was a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI in the nightcap for Widener. Stephanie Caulford was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs. Mallory Meyer took the loss in relief.

Meyer won the first game as she allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits over seven innings. Caulford went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs while Ashlee Hutchins was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Delaware Valley was paced by Kelly Andrews as she went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Nicole Dorney was 1-for-4 with her lone blow being a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh that pulled the Aggies to within one, 5-4. Dorney, a sophomore, now has eight career home runs, one shy of tying the school's all-time record.
