(NJ) -- Kirstyn Ruhling hurled a four-hit shutout for a 3-0 Delaware Valley College
victory in the opener, but the Aggies suffered a heartbreaking, 6-5 defeat in
the second game as they split a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Drew University.
Delaware Valley moved its record to 12-17 overall and 4-8 in conference
action while the Rangers remained in the fourth and final playoff spot with an11-18
overall record and a 4-4 mark in the Freedom. The Aggies have four doubleheaders,
including one conference twinbill, remaining on their schedule. Ruhling
won her fifth game of the year in 12 decisions as she allowed just five baserunners
on four hits and one Aggie error. Only two Rangers reached second base in the
contest, the last coming in the seventh inning on a leadoff double by Brittany
Westcott. However, Ruhling got the next three batters out for the victory. The
game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Maureen Ferguson opened with a
single and advanced to third on a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt. Ferguson then
scored on a two-out, infield single by Lacy Miles. Delaware Valley picked
up a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as Amy DeBuck singled and moved up
to third on a sacrifice bunt and a Drew passed ball. Miles knocked in her second
run of the game with an RBI single into left-center field. Miles later scored
when Nicole Dorney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Miles went 2-for-4
in the contest while Kelly Andrews also had a multiple-hit game by going 2-for-3. The
nightcap saw Delaware Valley blow a 5-1 lead as the Rangers came back with three
runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth for a tied ballgame. Then with
two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Westcott smacked a home run off of Ruhling
- who came in to pitch the final two-plus innings of the contest - for the game-winner.
The Aggies built their advantage with two runs in the first inning, one
in the third and two more in the fifth. Andrews went 2-for-4 with a double, one
run scored and one RBI while Dorney was 2-for-4. Kim Harle had a double and scored
a pair of runs while Stephanie Sedeyn also had an RBI. Lauren Collini, who
lost the opener, earned the victory in relief of Drew starter Kristin Valle. Westcott's
home run was her lone hit of the game while Melissa Kraft went 2-for-4 with a
home run and four RBIs. |
