2) CENTER VALLEY (PA) - Sophomore catcher Nicole Dorney became
Delaware Valley College's all-time home run leader as her dramatic, three-run
round-tripper in extra innings of the first game helped lift the visiting Aggies
to a doubleheader sweep of Freedom Conference foe DeSales University, 4-1 and
6-5. Delaware Valley, which had no runs and seven hits combined in its first
four conference games, tallied 10 runs and 17 hits on Saturday as the Aggies improved
to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the Freedom. The Lady Bulldogs fell to 6-11 and 0-4. The
opener was tied at 1-1 heading into innings. Delaware Valley's first two batters
grounded out in the eighth before Robyn Jackson singled and Kelly Andrews walked.
That brought Dorney to the plate and she drilled a pitch deep over the fence for
a 4-1 Aggie lead and the school record. It was her third home run of the season
and the 10th of her brief collegiate career as she broke the tie with 1994 graduate
and Delaware Valley Hall of Famer Kelly Sciss. Aggie pitcher Kirstyn Ruhling
retired DeSales in order in the bottom of the eighth to improve her record to
3-4. She allowed just one run and five hits in the complete-game victory. Dorney
finished the first game 2-for-4 with four RBIs as she also knocked in a run with
a single in the fourth inning. Kim Harle also went 2-for-4 in the contest. The
nightcap saw Delaware Valley rally from 5-1 deficit as it scored four times in
the fourth and added one more in the seventh for the 6-5 victory. Dorney knocked
in the first run of the fourth while Christine Yacco had an RBI on a fielder's
choice and Harle ripped a two-run single. In the seventh, Jackson reached
on an error and Andrews also reached safely on a sacrifice bunt and fielder's
choice. Both runners moved up a base on Dorney's ground out and Jackson scored
on an RBI ground out by Kristin Lup. Harle finished 2-for-4 with three
RBUs while Jackson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Stephanie Raziano improved
to 2-5 as she allowed five runs and 10 hits while striking out one in seven innings
of work. |
