University 4 (Game 1 - 8 innings) Widener University 10, Delaware Valley 6
(Game 2) CHESTER (PA) -- Delaware Valley College reached double
figures in victories for the first time in three years and only the second since
1996 as the Aggie split a non-conference doubleheader with host Widener University.
Delaware Valley captured the first game in eight innings, 6-4, but fell 10-6 in
the nightcap. The Aggies are now 10-17 on the season and have split four
of their five doubleheaders. They will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday
and look for a sweep to give them their first 12-win season since 1996 (12-16-1).
The split moved Widener's record to 8-23. In the first game, Delaware Valley
used the long ball to rally from a 3-0 deficit to force extra innings. The Aggies
scored once in the fifth on Kirstyn Ruhling's second home run of the season. In
the sixth, Christine Bowie singled and, three batters later, Nicole Dorney smashed
her third home run of the season to tie the contest. Delaware Valley did
not record a hit in the eighth inning, but took advantage of three Pioneer errors
to score three times and build a 6-3 advantage. Widener scored one run and had
the bases loaded, but Stephanie Raziano got Mollie Ahern to pop up to second to
end the game. Raziano won her first collegiate game (1-5) as she pitched
five innings of relief and allowed just two earned run on three hits. Jennifer
Bummer started, went three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Bowie was
the lone Aggie to have a multiple-hit game as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Dorney and Ruhling's home runs were their lone hits of the game. The nightcap
saw Delaware Valley score five times in the top of the second, highlighted by
Katie Leach's three-run double. However, Widener answered with seven runs in the
third inning and never looked back. Leach was 2-for-4 with the double and three
RBIs. Bowie also had a RBI in the game. |
