DOYLESTOWN (PA) - The Delaware Valley College softball team ended
its home portion of the schedule by sweeping a pair of non-conference
game from visiting Philadelphia Biblical University, 8-3 and 14-2.
The second game was called after five innings due to the eight-run
mercy rule.
The Aggies are now 8-23 on the season and will conclude the 2004
campaign at DeSales University on Saturday, April 24. The Crimson
Eagles fell to 2-14 with the losses.
In the first game, Delaware Valley rallied from a 3-0 deficit to
pick up the victory. Philadelphia Biblical scored all three of its
runs in the top of the first, but the Aggies got one back in the
bottom of the inning on Katie Leach's RBI single. They then tied
the game in the second as Ashley Beam had an RBI single and another
scored on a rundown.
Delaware Valley took the lead with three runs in the fourth as Beam
drew a bases loaded walk and Tammy Banks added a two-run single.
The team then put the game away in the sixth on a two-run single
by Jenn Welsh.
Michelle Smith picked up her fifth win of the season as she allowed
just one earned run and five hits in seven innings while striking
out six. Beam finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two stolen
bases and two RBIs. Leach went 2-for-2 while Banks and Welsh had
two RBIs apiece.
In the nightcap, Delaware Valley notched 10 hits and was also aided
by nine Philadelphia Biblical errors, including seven miscues in
a six-run first inning. Beam and Lindsay Eversole recorded the lone
RBIs of the contest.
Banks, a senior playing in her final home games, knocked in one
of the two runs in the third inning while Welsh's two-run single
highlighted a six-run fourth inning.
Welsh finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs
while Banks went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Leach and Eversole added
two hits apiece in the victory. Megan Chapin won her second game
as she allowed just one earned run and five hits in five innings
of work.
