NORTH MYRTLE BEACH (SC) -- A game-ending triple play lifted the
Delaware Valley College softball team to a 4-2 triumph over New
Jersey City University in the Aggies' 2004 season opener during
their Spring Break trip to South Carolina.
The win also came in the Delaware Valley head coaching debut of
Rich Matarese, a former assistant at nearby Central Bucks West High
School.
Down 4-2, New Jersey City (0-1) loaded the bases with no outs in
the bottom of the seventh. Meagan Tullock drilled a liner to short
that was grabbed with a diving stop by Ashley Beam. Beam threw to
second to complete a double play before catching the runner off
third for a triple play.
Delaware Valley took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when returning
all-conference honoree Tammy Banks single in a run and then scored
on a pa ssed ball. The Gothic Knights tied the game in the fourth
before the Aggies took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth
on a passed ball and a New Jersey City error.
Michelle Smith picked up the win as she allowed just four hits
over seven innings.
