Delaware Valley College 17, Lycoming College 16

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Freshman quarterback Mike Isgro hit senior tight end Andrew Kovach for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 8:33 remaining and the Delaware Valley College defense made a late stand as the Aggies edged visiting Lycoming College, 17-16, in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) game.

Delaware Valley improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Warriors had their seven-game winning streak that dated back to last year snapped as they fell to 2-1 both overall and in the MAC.

Lycoming held leads of 9-0 and 16-7, the latter coming on quarterback Glenn Smith's 20-yard touchdown run and Mike Monastra's extra-point with 7:08 remaining in the third quarter. Smith's run capped a three-play, 60-yard drive that included a 34-yard pass from Smith to Tony Kopp.

The Aggies cut into Lycoming lead as an eight-play, 66-yard drive culminated in Bill Miller's 27-yard field as time expired in the third quarter. The kick was set up by a pair of big pass plays from Isgro, a 21-yard toss to David Carmon and a 39-yarder to Don Marshall.

The Warriors went three-and-out on their next drive and Delaware Valley took over at its own 33-yard line. They converted a pair of third downs as Isgro ran for 11 yards on a third-and-five and Marshall caught a 17-yard pass from Isgro on a third-and-nine.

The Aggies then faced a third-and-five from the Lycoming 17-yard line when Isgro hit Kovach at the eight-yard line. The tight end broke a pair of tackles and went into the end zone for his first collegiate touchdown. Miller added the point-after and Delaware Valley had its first lead of the game, 17-16.

The Aggies appeared ready to run the clock out later in the fourth but a fumble exchange between Isgro and tailback Antonio Fernanders was recovered by Lycoming's Chris Tribanas at the Warrior 43 with 1:59 on the clock.

Smith completed three of his first four passes on the drive, including a 15-yarder to Kopp that put the ball on the Delaware Valley 30. He rushed for three yards on first down but was sacked for a 10-yard loss by Justin Porter on the next play, leaving the Warriors with a third-and-17 from Aggies 37. Smith's pass was broken up in the end zone by a pair of Aggies to set up fourth down. Smith then had his last pass of the day tipped and intercepted by Kevin Bliss in the end zone with 36 seconds to go and Delaware Valley had the victory.

Lycoming scored the lone touchdown of the first half as Kopp hauled in a four-yard scoring pass from Smith to cap an 11-play, 68-yard drive. However, Monastra's extra-point was blocked by Derek Henderson to leave the score at 6-0 with 2:20 left in the first quarter.

The Warriors added to their lead as they took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 53 yards before settling for Monastra's 34-yard field goal with 10:54 to go in the third.

Delaware Valley, which was held to just 38 yards of total offense in the first half, nearly doubled that on its first drive of the third quarter as the Aggies went 72 yards on four plays. Carmon made a 48-yard diving catch on a third down play and Marshall followed by hauling in a 20-yard bullet from Isgro for a touchdown. Miller's extra-point made it a 9-7 ballgame with 8:58 left in the third.

Delaware Valley finished the day with 266 yards, including 199 from the arm of Isgro as he completed 11 of 24 passes, including two scores. Marshall made three grabs for 76 yards and a touchdown while Carmon had two receptions for 69 yards. Kovach had two catches for 26 yards and the game-winning score.

Porter led the Aggies defense with 10 tackles, including the big sack while Anthony Silver notched eight tackles and two sacks. Travis Albanesius had a big game as well with seven stops and 1.5 sacks.

Smith was 25-for-37 for 232 yards, one touchdown and one interception while also rushing 15 times for 35 yards and a score. Kopp caught six passes for 85 yards and a touchdown while Chris Beissel made six catches for 55 yards. Mike DiPlaciodo led the Warrior defensive charge with a game-high 11 tackles.
