Delaware Valley College 21, Albright College
13
READING (PA) - Freshman quarterback Mike Isgro tossed a pair of
touchdown passes and also ran for a score as Delaware Valley College
downed host Albright College, 21-13, in a Middle Atlantic Conference
(MAC) game played at Shirk Stadium.
The win was the fourth straight for the Aggies as they improved
to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Lions fell to 1-5
and 1-4.
Delaware Valley got off to a slow start offensively, turning the
ball on its first two possessions. The second was a fumble that
Albright's Marc Hunsberger recovered at the Aggie 49-yard line.
Ten plays later, the Lions found the end zone as on third-and-two,
quarterback Kelly Tanner found fullback Tyrell Drumgo for a two-yard
touchdown pass. Ryan Juisti's kick hit the left upright, leaving
the score at 6-0 with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter.
It stayed that way until late in the first half when the Aggies
took over on their own 20-yard line with 2:16 remaining. Delaware
Valley, which had just 19 yards of total offense on 22 plays heading
into the possession, went on an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive
that was capped by quarterback Mike Isgro's 42-yard touchdown pass
to John Kiphorn. Kiphorn, who had dropped an open pass one play
earlier, leaped over an Albright defender for the score, his second
of the season. Bill Miller added the extra point and Delaware Valley
took a 7-6 lead with just 39 seconds remaining in the half.
The Aggies received the opening kickoff of the second half but
were stopped and ready to punt the ball back to the Lions. However,
Albright was called for an illegal substitution penalty on the punt
formation, giving Delaware Valley an automatic first down at its
own 46-yard line. Isgro went deep on the very next play and Don
Marshall hauled it in with a defender draped all over him for a
54-yard touchdown. Miller added the extra-point for a 14-6 advantage
with 12:27 left in the third quarter.
Albright began the fourth quarter with a long drive that was keyed
by a 28-yard run by Jason Heintzelman and a 15-yard Delaware Valley
facemask penalty. The Lions reached the Aggie 11-yard line and faced
a fourth-and-five when Kelly's pass was broken up in the end zone
by Joe Barnicle with 9:35 to go.
Delaware Valley took over and had a third-and-eight and Isgro scrambled
for a 43-yard run and a first down. Two plays later, Isgro went
for the touchdown but his pass was intercepted by Juisti at the
Albright one-yard line with 7:06 left on the clock.
Delaware Valley forced an Albright punt in the end zone and took
over on the Lion 38. On third-and-seven from the 35, Isgro hit Jake
Sheffield out of the backfield for a 24-yard, catch and run to the
11-yard line. Then on fourth-and-one from the two-yard line, Isgro
ran for a yard and the first down. Isgro then snuck in on the next
play. Miller's extra-point made it 21-6 with 1:34 remaining.
Back came Albright off a 47-yard kickoff return by Nate Romig and,
later, a seven-yard touchdown pass from Kelly to Stephen Asay. Juisit's
extra-point pulled the Lions back to within eight, 21-13 with 43
seconds to go. Albright's onside kick attempt was recovered by Chad
Peterman to seal the game for the Aggies.
Isgro finished 15-for-24 for 193 yards and two touchdowns and also
rushed for career and game-high 79 yards and one score on 13 carries.
Sheffield rushed 14 times for 64 yards and caught seven passes for
63 yards. Kiphorn finished with four receptions for 59 yards and,
in the process, moved into 10th place on the Aggie receiving list.
Defensively, Anthony Silver had nine tackles and 1.5 sacks as he
tied the Delaware Valley all-time record for sacks with 23. John
Pursell added nine tackles and a sack while Travis Albanesius, Matt
Murphy and Justin Porter had seven tackles apiece. Quincy Thaxton
recorded an interception.
Kelly was 22-for-40 for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns for
Albright. Asay finished with six grabs for 59 yards and one those
scores.
