- 2004 Season Archive Head
coach G.A. Mangus and the Aggies finished the most successful season in school
history with a 12-1 record, a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championship and
the school's first berth to the NCAA Division III playoffs in a team-qualifying
sport. The Aggies hosted and won their first two playoff games in front of capacity
crowds before falling in the quarterfinals.
Delaware Valley had a flair
for the dramatic all season long, with six fourth-quarter comebacks, including
both postseason victories. The opening round playoff game saw the Aggies rally
for a 21-17 victory over Shenandoah University. The following week saw Delaware
Valley score two touchdowns in the final 62 seconds, including the game-winner
with just nine seconds remaining, in a 26-20 triumph over St. John Fisher College. Those
victories came after a perfect 10-0 regular season that included come-from-behind
efforts against conference rivals Susquehanna University (46-39), King's College
(20-19), Lycoming College (26-19) and Albright College (35-28). The Aggies
received a number of accolades following the season, led by Mangus. The former
University of Florida quarterback was named the MAC Coach of the Year for the
second year in a row and also earned the East Region Coach of the Year Award from
Don Hansen's Football Gazette. Mangus was then voted as the American Football
Coaches Association (AFCA) Division III Region 2 Coach of the Year and was a candidate
for the national honor as well. Mangus' offseason was then capped when he was
named the Tri-State Coach of the Year by the prestigious Maxwell Football Club.
Ten players were named to the all-MAC team, including senior linebacker
Andrew Erby who also earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Erby was also
named a third team All-American by D3football.com. Joining Erby on that
squad was sophomore wideout David Carmon, who was named an honorable mention All-American.
Senior offensive lineman Jamie Kleinle earned third team All-American honors from
Don Hansen's Football Gazette and also played in the Aztec Bowl. Choose
