Head
coach G.A. Mangus and the Aggies finished the 2003 season with a
school-record 9-2 mark (7-2 and tied for second in the Middle Atlantic
Conference) and capped it all by winning the Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Southeast Championship.
Delaware Valley notched one of the top one-year turnarounds in
Division III history as the Aggies were 2-8 overall, 1-8 and in
last place in the MAC in 2002. The 6.5-game improvement ranks fifth
on the all-time list and they were ranked in national polls at various
times throughout the season.
Delaware Valley began the year with a 4-0 mark for the first time
since 1957. Down the stretch, the Aggies posted come-from-behind
victories at nationally-renowned programs Lycoming College (38-27)
and Widener University (56-55 in overtime). The team then went to
the postseason for the first time in school history and notched
a 54-37 thriller over The College of New Jersey.
Mangus was named the MAC Coach of the Year and six players earned
all-conference honors. Senior safety Carlo DeAngelo had nine interceptions
to rank among the national leaders and was named to three separate
All-American Teams. Sophomore tailback/returner Taylor Ramos was
named a second team All-American by D3football.com for his special
teams work (Punt Returns: 18-yard average, 2 touchdowns; Kick Returns:
20.6-yard average).
