LYCOMING COLLEGE 54, DELAWARE VALLEY 0
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Lycoming College racked up 441 yards of total
offense while its defense limited Delaware Valley College to just
60 yards as the Warriors posted a 54-0 road victory in the Middle
Atlantic Conference (MAC) and season opener for both teams.
The loss spoiled the coaching debut of G.A. Mangus, who was named
the new Delaware Valley head coach in May.
The game was scoreless after one quarter of play before Lycoming,
which is ranked 17th in the American Football Coaches Association
Division III poll, scored three times in the second stanza for a
21-0 halftime lead.
Jon Neve scored on a two-yard run on the opening play of the second
quarter. It capped a five-yard scoring drive that set-up by a special
teams play. Aggie punter Pat Conerly fielded a low snap and then
fumbled as he was hit by Joe Dumas. Brian Bond caught the fumble
out of the air and returned it 21 yards.
The next drive saw Delaware Valley freshman quarterback Adam Knoblauch
get picked off by Matt Henrich at the Aggie 32-yard line. Five plays
later, Jared Morris scored from a yard out. Dave Christensen missed
the extra-point leaving the score at 13-0 with 11:32 left in the
half.
At the end of the half, Lycoming went on a 10-play, 84-yard scoring
drive that was capped by Bill Mann's 23-yard touchdown pass to Brandon
Johnson with just four seconds remaining. Mann then hit Ray Withelder
for the two-point conversion and a 21-0 advantage.
The Warriors put the game away in the third quarter as they scored
26 points on touchdowns runs by Jon Slemmer (7 yards), Neve (3 yards)
and a pair of scores by Bob Miller (17 and 15 yards). Matt Mangold
ended the scoring in the fourth quarter with a two-yard plunge.
Meanwhile the Lycoming defense allowed an average of 1.1 yards per
play (53 plays - 60 yards) and forced eight turnovers. The Aggies
were intercepted five times, including three by Henrich to tie a
Lycoming single-game record.
Three Delaware Valley quarterbacks combined to go 5-for-17 for 53
yards and the five interceptions. Al Glackin led the rushing attack
with 21 yards on 12 carries. Defensively, Nick Sabean, Andrew Erby
and Azaria Numerato had 10 tackles apiece for the Aggies. Sabean
also blocked an extra-point.
