OWINGS MILLS (MD) - It was a record-setting day for the Delaware
Valley College field hockey team as five standards were broken or
tied in a 13-0 victory over Wells College (NY) in the opening round
of the Villa Julie College Tournament.
The Aggies will now take on Bridgewater College (VA) in Sunday's
championship game (4:00 p.m.)
The 13 goals scored by Delaware Valley shattered the previous record
of seven that was accomplished on two occasions. The Aggies also
set a new standard with nine assists (breaking the mark of five
set against Albright in 1993) and 35 points (breaking the mark of
18 set against Cabrini in 1992).
Individually, sophomore Bethany Pavlik picked up where she left
off from her Rookie of the Year season as she scored five goals
and assisted on another for 11 points. The five goals tied the school
record that was originally set by Hall of Famer Diane Bradley against
Beaver in 1982 while the 11 points broke Bradley's mark of 10 from
that same game.
Junior Michelle Cernobyl notched four goals and one assists for
a nine-point afternoon. The first-team, all-conference forward went
from sixth to third on the all-time scoring list to third with 66
points.
Sophomore Danielle Heyne scored one goal and set a single-game
record with four assists to break the previous mark of three by
Claudia Krebs in a 1982 game against Moravian.
Freshman Holly Rich added two goals in her collegiate debut while
Amy Stafford recorded a goal. Stephanie Dec added two assists and
Marissa Di Miero had one assist in the win.
Meanwhile Delaware Valley's defense held Wells without a shot in
the contest. Jackie Deschenes was credited with the shutout.
