Field Hockey Delaware Valley 4, Widener
University 3 (OT) DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Freshman Amy Stafford picked
the right time to score her first collegiate goal as her tally just 4:40 into
overtime lifted the Delaware Valley College field hockey team to a 4-3 victory
over visiting Widener University in a non-conference game. The Aggies
snapped a two-game losing streak and returned to the .500 mark with a 7-7 record.
The Pioneers, who entered the contest having allowed just six goals on the year,
fell to 6-3. Delaware Valley dominated the extra session and held a 4-0
advantage in shots. The fourth shot ended the contest as Stafford took a short
pass from Dawn Eddis and her shot from the top of the box deflected off a Pioneer
player and past goalkeeper Kate Heritage for the game-winner. The two
teams alternated goals throughout regulation. Widener hit the scoreboard first
as Shannon Phelps connected off an assist from Jaime Carr just 6:49 into the contest.
However, the Aggies tied it up 46 seconds later as senior Tiffany LaRosa set up
Lauren Dubiel for the sophomore's sixth goal of the year. Widener answered
with 27:28 remaining before intermission as Eric Rose found the back of the cage
off a Missy Pappas assist. Back came Delaware Valley as freshman standout Michelle
Cernobyl scored her team-best 11th goal of the season off a Dubiel assist with
1:42 remaining in the half. In the second stanza, Mallory Meyer gave the
Pioneers a 3-2 lead with 17:02 to go off a feed from Pappas. Delaware Valley countered
less than two minutes later as Cernobyl set up junior Bobbie Fultz for her third
goal of the year with 15:38 remaining. The three-point game for Cernobyl upped
her total to 25, leaving her just seven points shy of tying the Aggies' single-season
record. Delaware Valley held a 22-16 advantage in shots and a 22-9 advantage
in corners, missing the single-game record for corners by just two. Jen Gately
stopped 11 shots for the win while Heritage made 13 stops at the other end. | |
