Field Hockey

Delaware Valley 3, Cabrini College 2 (2OT)

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - In her first collegiate game, freshman Michelle Cernobyl scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime, and added an assist as the Delaware Valley College field hockey opened its new field and the 2005 season with a 3-2 victory over visiting Cabrini College.

After missing on a number of opportunities, including a penalty stroke, in the first overtime, Delaware Valley put the ball in the cage just 4:31 into the second extra stanza. On an inbounds play, junior Shannon Shivak sent a crossing pass that went through everyone in the box and right to the stick of Cernobyl. Cernobyl put a low shot past Cavalier goalkeeper Joanne Musiolowski for the Aggie victory.

Cabrini opened the scoring less than three minutes into the contest, on an Ann Iye goal, but Cernobyl notched her first collegiate tally with 22:12 remaining in the first half off an assist from fellow rookie Any Stafford.

The Cavaliers regained the lead on Becca Gallagher's goal with 14:19 left in the first half. It stayed 2-1 until late in regulation when Cernobyl set up senior Tiffany LaRosa for the game-tying score with just 4:47 remaining.

Delaware Valley held a 26-22 advantage in shots and a 12-6 edge in corners. Freshman Jen Gately went the distance and stopped 17 shots in the victory.
