DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Delaware Valley College placed four players in
double figures as the Aggies notched a 77-64 victory over visiting
Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference game.
The win improved the Aggies to 8-9 overall and 4-2 in the Freedom
as they ended the first half of league play. The Lady Colonels fell
to 1-6 and 0-5.
Delaware Valley opened the game on a 10-2 run to take a lead it
would never relinquish. However, Wilkes fought back and trimmed
the lead to a single point, 18-17, on a Jessica Plisko 3-pointer
with 8:30 to play in the first stanza.
A jumper by Mandi Wilson, a layup by Brooke Dittmar and a trey
by Brittany Battinieri upped the Aggie lead to 25-17 with 4:54 to
go. Moments later the lead was six, 26-20, following a basket by
the Lady Colonels' Katie Cappelloni with 3:02 showing on the clock.
However, Delaware Valley closed the half on a 14-3 spurt with baskets
by six different players to take a double figure lead that it would
never give up. Kim Vennera and Dittmar both cashed in shots to make
it 30-20. After Brittany Ely answered with a bucket for Wilkes,
Battinieri hit a 3-pointer as the lead grew to 33-22.
Sam Lynam hit one of two free throws for the Lady Colonels to make
it 33-23. However, Moira Donohue knocked down a 3-pointer, and both
Rochelle Teesdale and Amanda Wilson converted shots to give the
Aggies a 40-23 lead at intermission.
Delaware Valley built its biggest lead of the afternoon, 56-34,
on a Donohue field goal with 13:12 left to play. A 14-5 run by Wilkes
cut the gap to 61-48, but the Lady Colonels were never able to get
the lead back to single digits.
Donohue scored a game-high 19 points and also added four assists.
Vennera contributed 17 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five
steals while Battinieri cashed in 17 tallies and had five helpers.
