COLLEGEVILLE (PA) - Ursinus College scored 14 of the game's first
16 points and never looked back as the Bears notched a 66-54 victory
over visiting Delaware Valley College in a non-conference contest.
The game was the last of the first semester for both teams. Ursinus
improved to 4-4 while the Aggies fell to 4-5. Delaware Valley will
return to action on Friday, January 4 when it battles Albright at
the Moravian College Winter Classic.
The Bears hit five of their first six shots, en route to their
14-2 lead just 4:04 into the contest. They led by as many as 16
in the stanza and eventually took a 41-27 advantage into the intermission.
Julie Brown paced Ursinus with 13 points in the half while Kim Vennera
(8 points) and Brooke Dittmar (7 points) netted more than half of
the Aggies' scoring output.
In the second half, back-to-back baskets by Brittany Battinieri
pulled Delaware Valley to within 10, 43-33, with 16:08 to go. Ursinus
bumped the lead back to 14 before the Aggies scored seven in a row,
including five by Moira Donohue to make it a 53-46 ballgame with
8:13 to go.
The Bears answered with a basket but a free throw by Vennera and
a jumper by Jessica Ruvolis had Delaware Valley trail by just six,
55-49, with 6:48 left on the clock. However, Ursinus scored six
straight and the Aggies never got closer than eight points the rest
of the way.
Carolyn Konstanzer notched game highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds
for the Bears. Brown finished with 15 points while Sarah Hennessey
added 11.
Vennera led Delaware Valley with 15 points and also added nine
rebounds, four assists and three steals. Donohue also hit double
figures with 13 points.
