Delaware Valley College 89, Drew University
88 (2 OT)
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Moira Donohue scored a career-high 33 points,
including the game-winning free throws with 13 seconds left in the
second overtime as Delaware Valley College edged visiting Drew University,
89-88, in a wild, non-conference game.
The victory was the first for the Aggies this season as they improved
to 1-3 on the year. The loss dropped the Rangers to 1-3.
Drew took an 87-88 lead with 28 seconds left in the second overtime
as Jessica DelVecchio drained a 3-pointer from the left corner.
Delaware Valley came back down the court and cleared out for Donohue
who was fouled while driving to the basket. The senior guard calmly
hit both foul shots for the 89-88 advantage.
Following a timeout, the Rangers had a chance for the lead but
Emma Grossman's running layup rolled off the rim and Delaware Valley's
Michelle Oyer grabbed the rebound and was fouled with six tenths
of a second to play. Oyer missed both foul shots, but time expired
on Drew and the Aggies had the win.
Delaware Valley led by as many as 14 in the first half and still
held a 12-point advantage with eigh minutes to play. Drew rallied
and then tied the game in dramtic fashion to force overtime. Down
69-67 with eight seconds to go, Grossman threw a baseball-like pass
down the court. Allison Hartnett leaped over a defender for the
ball, raced in and hit a layup while being fouled with five ticks
left. However, Hartnett missed the ensuing free throw and the Aggies
didn't get a shot off at the end of regulation.
In the first overtime, Drew led by as many as four, 74-70, with
2:44 remaining. However, Delaware Valley scored five straight points
on a Rochelle Teesdale layup and a three-point play by Kim Vennera.
Drew regained the lead at 76-75 on a Hartnett layup with 1:08 to
go. It stayed that way until the Aggies' Jen McCarthy was fouled
with 1.9 seconds left. The senior hit the first foul shot but missed
the second, sending the game into a second overtime at 76-76. That
led to Donohue's heroics at the end and a Delaware Valley victory.
Donohue was 12-for-21 from the field (2-for-8 from 3-point land)
and 7-for-9 from the foul line. She also had five assists and three
rebounds while playing the full 50 minutes. Brooke Dittmar finished
with 15 points and eight boards while Vennera notched 12 points,
11 rebounds, six assists and five steals. Shannon O'Neill also hit
double figures with 12.
Hartnett paced Drew with 21 points. Jessica Reid had 16 points
while Grossman and Laura Methvin followed with 13 points apiece.
