Aggies Nearly Upset Top-Ranked Team In Division III

DOYLESTOWN (PA) -- Stephanie Remington hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds remaining and The University of Scranton, ranked first in Division III, survived an upset bid from host Delaware Valley College with a 72-66, Freedom Conference victory.

The Lady Royals, notched their 15th win in their last 16 games and improved to 16-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference while the Aggies fell to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the Freedom.

Delaware Valley tied the game at 63-63 as Moira Donohue hit one of two free throws with 54 seconds to go. However on the ensuing possession, Remington got open at the top of the key and swished a 3-pointer. Rachel Joyce got a good look at a game-tying 3-pointer, but it went off the rim and Scranton's Casey Thran was fouled after the rebound. Thran swished both free throws for a 69-63 advantage with 22 ticks left.

The Aggies missed again and Remington was fouled with 10 seconds to go. She hit both free throws to push the lead to six, 69-63. Donohue hit an NBA-range 3-pointer before Thran connected on two more free throws with two seconds left to set the final score.

The Lady Royals bolted out to a 7-0 lead and eventually built it to 15-point advantage, 24-9, with 8:51 to go in the first half. Donohue then took over for Delaware Valley and scored 10 of her 13 first-half points in the final nine minutes of play as the Aggies went on a 21-4 run, including 14 straight at one point, to take a 30-28 halftime lead.

The game remained close throughout much of the second-half. Dononhue buried a 3-pointer and followed it up with a jump shot to give the Aggies their largest lead at 46-41 lead with 13:28 remaining, before Remington and Allison Matt hit 3-pointers and Tiffaney Williams added four points during a 14-7 rally to give Scranton a 55-53 advantage with 7:13 left.

After Matt connected on a pair of free throws to break a 55-55 tie with 5:55 remaining, Kathleen Daly came through for Scranton by connecting on a lay-up and adding two free throws with 3:37 left to give the Lady Royals a 61-57 lead.

However back came the Aggies and they regained the lead, 62-61, on a 3-pointer by Kim Vennera and a lay-up by Donohue that put the vocal crowd on its feet . However Daly came through again with a basket to give Scranton a 63-62 advantage with 2:30 left. Donohue tied the game for the final time by making one free throw before Remington's game-changing 3-pointer and the Lady Royal victory.

Donohue played all 40 minutes and poured in a game-high 24 points for Delaware Valley. Joyce recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Shannon O'Neill added 19 points and six assists.

Matt and fellow All-American Taryn Mellody finished with 14 points apiece for Scranton. Remington came off the bench for 14 while Daly also came off the bench and contributed 10 points and nine boards.
