MADISON (NJ) - Four players reached double figures in scoring,
led by Moira Donohue's 20 points as Delaware Valley College notched
a crucial, 76-64 road victory over Drew University in a Freedom
Conference game.
The win was the third straight for the Aggies as they improved
to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Meanwhile the Rangers
fell from the unbeaten ranks in Freedom action as they are 7-6 overall
and 2-1 in the conference.
Delaware Valley never trailed in the contest and the game was tied
on just one occasion at 2-2 in the opening 90 seconds. The Aggies
then scored 15 of the next 20 points, including eight by Donohue,
for a 17-7 advantage with 12:20 remaining in the half.
Drew fought back and it a one-point ballgame, 25-24, with 5:39
left before intermission, The Rangers then had four opportunities
to tie or take the lead but they missed a layup and a trio of 3-point
shots.
Freshman Angela Mensch then helped Delaware Valley maintain its
advantage as she scored eight of the team's final 10 points of the
half and the Aggies led 35-31 at the break.
It was still a four-point contest three minutes into the second
half when Delaware Valley erupted for an 18-7 run and its largest
lead of the game, 55-40 with 8:05 to go. Senior Rachel Joyce paced
the spurt with seven points.
The Aggie lead stayed mostly in double digits for the rest of the
contest until a late Ranger rally made it 70-64 with 26 ticks left.
However Brooke Dittmar hit a layup and Donohue and Shannon O'Neill
hit a pair of free throws apiece for the 76-64 final.
Donohue added four assists and four steals to her team-high point
total. Joyce notched 16 points and four rebounds and, in the process,
moved into a tie with Andrea Shumack for fourth place on the Aggies's
all-time rebounding list (644). Mensch was 4-for-4 from 3-point
land and finished with a career-high 14 points in just 11 minutes
of action. O'Neill also hit double figures with 10 points. Freshman
guard Kim Vennera scored eight points and grabbed an Aggie season-high
19 rebounds.
Melissa Kraft had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead Drew. Courtney
Cunningham scored 12 points while Maggie Marquis and Laura Methvin
added eight points apiece.
