University of Scranton 68, Delaware Valley 56

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Taryn Mellody scored 27 points to lead the No. 3 University of Scranton to its 16th win in a row and a 68-56 victory at Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game.

The Lady Royals improved their record to 16-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference play. The Aggies dropped their second straight and fell to 8-7, 1-5.

Mellody hit 10 of 17 shots from the field (3-for-3 from 3-point land) and was 4-for-5 from the foul line. She also added seven rebounds and two assists in 37 minutes of action.

Delaware Valley jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first three minutes with all the points coming from Juli McGowan. She opened the game with a layup and two free throws and followed with back-to-back 3-pointers.

Scranton came back and the lead changed hands five times in the half, including a 3-point play by Bridget Golden that gave the Aggies a 27-24 advantage with 1:57 remaining. However the Lady Royals countered with the last eight points of the half - six by Mellody - for a 32-27 advantage at the intermission.

Delaware Valley hung around and trailed by just four, 36-32 after a Golden free throw with 15:36 to go. However, Mellody scored eight points and had an assist as part of a 14-2 run that put the game as the Aggies never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Tara Gemmel also reached double figures for Scranton with 12 points while Eileen Webster added eight points and six rebounds.

McGowan finished with 18 points to pace Delaware Valley. Golden added 17 points and 15 rebounds and moved into sixth place on the Aggie all-time scoring list with 1,116 points. Jackie Hartzell reached double figures with 10 points and point guard Shannon O'Neill scored seven points while dishing out a career-high 10 assists.
