Women's Basketball OPENING ROUND OF
THE JIM CRAWLEY CLASSIC Delaware Valley
111, Hood College 75 FROSTBURG (MD) - The Delaware Valley College
women's basketball team opened its 2004-05 season by setting a school record for
points as the Aggies routed Hood College, 111-75, in the first round of the Jim
Crawley Classic at Frostburg State University. Delaware Valley will meet
Frostburg State at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. It is not a championship game of the
classic as the pairings for both days were set in advance. The Aggies
set the tone early as they forced a turnover in the first 30 seconds and went
on to a 17-3 lead in the opening five minutes. They later scored 12 of the final
15 points in the first half and held a 59-27 advantage at the break, shooting
a blistering 71.4 percent (25-for-35) in the first 20 minutes. Delaware
Valley upped the lead to as many as 42, 100-58, in the second half and finished
the game with a 64.3 shooting percentage (45-for-70) from the field. The Aggies
also got the job done from 3-point land as they hit 11 of 21 attemts (52.4 percent).
Seven of the 10 players on the Delaware Valley roster reached double figures
in scoring, led by senior center Bridget Golden's 19 points in 23 minutes of action.
She hit seven of eight shots from the field and moved into 10th place on the Aggie
all-time scoring list with 947 points. Sophomore Rachel Joyce notched
18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists while junior Kate McCarthy added 15 points
off the bench. Junior Juli McGowan (12) and senior Jackie Hartzell (10) also reached
double figures. Freshmen Moira Donohue, Beccie Strohecker and Shannon
O'Neill had successful debuts as the trio combined for 32 points and 17 assists.
Donohue had 10 points and a game-high eight assists in 16 minutes off the bench.
Strohecker and O'Neill were both in the starting lineup and scored 13 and nine
points respectively. O'Neill also added seven assists in the win. Rita
Willis paced Hood with 22 points while Danielle Gallagher recorded 15 points and
11 rebounds. | |
