Hogan Notches 100th Win As Aggie Head Coach

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - The guard tandem of Juli McGowan and Jackie Hartzell combined for 42 points, including 10 3-pointers, and Laura Hogan recorded her 100th win as head coach as Delaware Valley College downed visiting Wilkes University 82-66 in a Freedom Conference game.

Hogan became just the second head coach in Aggie women's basketball history to reach the milestone, joining Gary Pento - who coached Hogan at Delaware Valley from 1986 to 1990 - on the exclusive list. Hogan took over a program in 1996 that had won just three games the previous season. Since then, she has amassed a 100-102 record with four trips to the MAC/Freedom Conference playoffs - including one appearance in the conference championship game - three trips to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoffs and an ECAC Southern Region Championship in 2001.

The win improved Delaware Valley to 12-10 overall, 7-5 and in fourth place in the Freedom Conference with two games remaining. The Aggies are ahead of Drew University (5-6) and Lycoming College (5-6) by 1½ games, but have games against nationally-ranked DeSales University and the University of Scranton to end the regular season. Drew has three road contests remaining against the lower tier of the conference (FDU-Florham, Lycoming and Wilkes), and Lycoming battles Wilkes and Drew before traveling to DeSales to end the season.

McGowan scored 22 points in 24 minutes off the bench as she hit 8 of 14 shots from the field, including a 4-for-7 effort from beyond the arc. Hartzell was even better from 3-point land as she hit 6 of 8 long-distance bombs and finished the afternoon with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists.

As a team, Delaware Valley hit 13 of 20 attempts from 3-point land, including a 7-for-10 showing in the first half. Hartzell hit two of those treys in a 21-second span to cap a 12-0 run that gave Delaware Valley a 42-26 lead with 1:55 to go in the half. The team eventually took a 47-44 lead into the intermission as Kate McCarthy drilled a 3-pointer from about 30 feet out at the buzzer.

The Lady Colonels (2-19, 1-10) still trailed 64-46 with 10:53 to go before they scored 11 straight points to make it a seven-point game with 8:44 remaining. Andrea DeMaranville and Rena Bolin led the spurt with five and four points respectively.

However, Delaware Valley recovered and scored 16 of the next 21 points to put the game away at 82-62 with 1:43 left. Senior Shannon McCormick hit a pair of 3-pointers while McGowan scored five points in the run.

Rachel Joyce added 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the victory. Bridget Golden notched a double-double with 12 and 12 rebounds while McCormick finished with six points and 10 boards.

DeMaranville led all scorers with 27 points as she hit 9 of 18 shots from the field and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line. Bolin notched 12 points and seven rebounds and Lurena Gimble had career highs of 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
