Aggies Advance To Cabrini College Tip-Off Tournament Championship Game

RADNOR (PA) -- The Delaware Valley College women's basketball team opened up its 2003-04 season by defeating Washington College (Md), 89-67, in the first round of the Cabrini College Tip-Off Tournament.

The Aggies now advance to Saturday's championship game (4:00 p.m.) against Cabrini, which edged Chestnut Hill by a 58-56 score.

Down 3-2 early in the game, Delaware Valley (1-0) outscored the Shorewomen, 19-4, over the next few minutes to take a commanding, 14-point lead. The Aggies led by 10 at halftime and their largest advantage was the 22-point final.

Junior forward/center Bridget Golden, who was just one of two players in the Freedom Conference to average a double-double (12.8 ppg, 10.0 rpg) last season, picked up where she left off as she shot 11-for-16 from the field and finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds in 34 minutes of action.

Sophomore guard Kate McCarthy nearly had a triple-double as she notched career highs of 22 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Junior Jackie Hartzell also had a career night with 16 points.

Senior Shannon McCormick also reached double figures with 12 points while sophomore Jennifer McCarthy came off the bench to grab a career-best 10 rebounds.

Yianna Patronas and Regina Barrett paced Washington (0-1) with 17 and 14 points respectively.
