ANNVILLE
(PA) - Delaware Valley College nearly pulled off its second upset
of the season as the Aggies traveled to Lebanon Valley College and
were edged by the 23rd-ranked Flying Dutchmen, 61-58, in a non-conference
game.
Delaware Valley fell to 10-9 with the loss while Lebanon Valley
improved to 17-2 with wins in 12 of its last 13 contests.
The Aggies had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds as
they passed the ball around to Jackie Hartzell for a 3-point attempt.
However, the junior's shot was blocked by Tamika Rogers and Lebanon
Valley came away with the rebound to hold on to the win.
The Flying Dutchmen led by as many as five in the first half, but
Delaware Valley scored the final five points before intermission
to take a 36-33 lead into the break. Rachel Joyce began the spurt
by hitting one free throw and Juli McGowan connected on a layup
with 43 seconds to go. Kate McCarthy then went to the foul line
with 21 seconds left and made both shots for the three-point advantage.
Lebanon Valley regained the lead and built it to as many seven,
57-50, with 7:06 remaining. The Aggies came right back with 3-pointers
by McGowan and Hartzell to make it 57-56 with 5:06 to go.
Both teams went scoreless for the next three minutes until Jennifer
Nortcott's jumper upped the Flying Dutchmen's lead to three. It
stayed that way until there were 25 seconds remaining when Bridget
Golden hit a pair of free throws for Delaware Valley. The Aggies
then fouled Erin Eaby nine seconds later and she hit two free throws
for a 61-58 lead. That set the stage for the last-second dramatics.
Golden paced Delaware Valley with 16 points while also adding eight
rebounds and two blocks. Hartzell hit three 3-pointers and finished
with 13 points and four assists while McGowan had eight points off
the bench. McCarthy added seven points and a game-best six steals.
Eaby's 22 points led all scorers and she also added five rebounds
and five steals. Min-Leigh Myers came off the bench to score 15
points while Rogers and Jennifer Northcutt combined for 31 rebounds
as Lebanon Valley held a 62-43 advantage on the boards.
