(Consolation Game of Franklin & Marshall College Tip-Off Tournament)
LANCASTER (PA) -- Seven Delaware Valley College players reached
double figures in scoring as the Aggies routed Trinity College (Washington,
D.C.), 108-44, in the consolation game of the Franklin & Marshall
College Tip-Off Tournament.
The 108 points and 64-point margin of victory are the highest totals
in the 28-year history of the Delaware Valley College women's basketball
program. The Aggies defeated Beaver College (now Arcadia) by 55
points, 104-49 during the 1984-85 campaign.
The Aggies (1-1) scored 54 points in each half and led 54-26 at
the break. They shot 51.6 percent from the field (33-for-64), held
a 54-40 advantage in rebounds, and limited Trinity (0-2) to just
25.7 percent shooting (18-for-70)
Senior guard Amber Smolinsky was named to the all-tournament team
as she followed her 26-point performance on Saturday, with a game-high
20 points against Trinity. Smolinsky upped her career scoring total
to 996 and is just four points shy of becoming the seventh player
in Delaware Valley history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Smolinsky
also added seven rebounds and three assists in the victory.
Four freshmen reached double figures for the first time in their
early collegiate careers, including twin sisters Kate and Jennifer
McCarthy who notched 16 and 14 points respectively. The two also
combined for 11 rebounds. Juli McGowan scored 14 points while Ashley
Ziegler connected for 12 points and dished out a game-high five
assists.
Sophomore center Bridget Golden recorded 12 points and a game-high
11 rebounds while fellow sophomore Jackie Hartzell had career highs
of 10 points and seven boards.
Bonita Winchester paced Trinity with seven points while Lakeisha
Hopkins and Rochelle Hayes chipped in six points apiece.
