Women's Basketball

University of Scranton 80, Delaware Valley 57

SCRANTON (PA) -- The University of Scranton women's basketball team jumped out to leads of 12-0 and 24-4 as the eighth-ranked Lady Royals cruised to an 80-57 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in the Freedom Conference both teams.

The game was also a rematch of last year's Freedom Conference Championship Game, which Scranton won at home, 71-62, to advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The Lady Royals (5-0, 1-0) came flying out the games and hit five of their first six shots from the field. The 24-4 advantage came with 11:57 to go in the half and it was their biggest lead of the first 20 minutes as Scranton took a 39-22 advantage into the intermission. Delaware Valley (1-3, 0-1) never pulled closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Senior guard Amber Smolinsky led the Aggies with a game-high 25 points. She was 8-for-12 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line. Shannon McCormick came off the bench to add nine points and six rebounds while Juli McGowan scored eight points in 15 minutes of action.

Tara Gemmel paced Scranton with 18 points, including 13 in the first galf. Kate Pierangeli added 15 points while Eileen Webster and Judy Flounders finished with 10 points apiece.
