Delaware Valley 67, Johns Hopkins University 65

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Senior guard Amber Smolinsky hit a floater in the paint with 5.5 seconds remaining to give Delaware Valley College a 67-65 upset victory over regional power Johns Hopkins University in a non-conference game

The win improved the Aggies to 4-9 on the season while the Blue Jays fell to 10-4. The game was also a vast difference from the meeting a year ago when Johns Hopkins posted an 85-59 victory at home.

The Blue Jays tied the game at 65-65 with 14.7 seconds remaining as Kathy Darling took an inbounds pass from Ashley Felix and hit a lay-up. Delaware Valley called timeout after crossing the halfcourt line three seconds later.

Smolinsky received the inbounds pass and brought the ball to the top of the key. She then drove into the paint, floated a shot above Darling and rattled it home. With no timeout, Johns Hokins drove downcourt and a pass deflected out of bounds off a Delaware Valley player with 1.2 seconds left. Darling received an inbounds pass in traffic and her shot from the paint hit the rim and stayed out, giving the Aggies the upset victory.

Delaware Valley trailed 43-40 at halftime as Maureen Myers' banked home a running 3-pointer at the buzzer for Johns Hopkins. The game turned into a defensive battle in the second half with the Aggies outscoring the Blue Jays, 27-22, in the final 20 minutes. The game also featured 14 ties and six lead changes.

Smolinsky led all scorers with 18 points and moved into fourth place on the Aggie all-time scoring list with 1,198 points. Bridget Golden had 17 points and 12 rebounds whileShannon McCormick also reached double figures with 12 points. Freshman guard Kate McCarthy had a solid all-around as she finished with nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Ashanna Randall paced Johns Hopkins with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Myers added 12 points and Darling notched 11 points and nine rebounds.
