DeSales University 77, Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - DeSales University hit four free throws in the
final eight seconds to survive a major scare and remain unbeaten
with a 77-73 victory over host Delaware Valley College in a Freedom
Conference game.
The Bulldogs, who are ranked sixth in Division III, improved to
14-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Thy also won their 16th
game in a row dating back to last year's run towards an ECAC Southern
Region Championship. The loss dropped the Aggies to 3-9 overall
and 0-4 in the conference. Three of the four conference defeats
have come against the No. 3, 6 and 12 teams in the country while
the other loss was a close road decision at Lycoming.
Delaware Valley trailed by 11, 73-62, with 3:28 remaining in the
game before going on an 11-0 run to tie the game with just 24 seconds
remaining. Senior guard Amber Smolinsky had six of the 11 points
including a floated in the lane that tied it up.
DeSales came downcourt with the ball and appeared to turn it over
on a double dribble. However, the officials ruled that a timeout
was called by the Bulldogs. They set up a play and Alyssa Antolick
was fouled with eight seconds left. She hit both foul shots for
a two-point lead.
The Aggies' Shannon McCormick then tried a long inbounds pass that
went out of play. Teri Antolick was fouled with four seconds to
go and she calmly hit both free throws to ice the game.
Delaware Valley came flying out of the game and scored nine of the
11 points. The Aggies took a 36-28 lead into the intermission as
they shot 48 percent from the field and held DeSales to just 22.5
percent shooting. However, things were different in the second half
as the Bulldogs connected on 55.2 percent of their shots including
a 6-for-7 showing from 3-point land.
Sophomore forward/center Bridget Golden paced Delaware Valley with
18 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 10-for-11 for the foul line
as the team missed just two foul shots in 21 attempts. Smolinsky
finished with 17 points, six assists and four steals while sophomore
Jackie Hartzell came off the bench to add a career-high 15 points.
She hit four of five attempts from 3-point land.
Amy Yencho led all scorers with 19 points. Teri Antoloick had 17
points and Alyssa Antlolick added 11.
