Vassar College 85, Delaware Valley College 70

DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Brian Butterworth hit eight of 12 shots from 3-point land and finished with a game-high 27 points as Vassar College spoiled Delaware Valley College's home opener with an 85-70, non-conference victory.

Butterworth hit five of his treys in the second half, including three in an 82-second span that keyed a 13-2 Brewer run and a 72-51 advantage with five minutes to go. He added another 3-pointer as part of 9-3 spurt that gave Vassar (2-1) its largest lead of the game at 82-56 with 1:25 to go. Butterworth finished 9-for-13 from the field and also added three rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes of action.

The Aggies (0-3) led by as many as six in the first half and still held a 24-19 advantage on a Raheem Wiggins free throw with 6:46 to go. However, the Brewers scored 13 straight points, including a pair of treys from Butterworth, to take the lead for good at 32-24 with 3:08 left before halftime. Vassar eventually took a 36-34 lead into the break and opened the second stanza with a 19-2 run to take control.

Lawrence Avitabile and Tyson Brazell added 15 points apiece for the Brewers while Matt Nunn added nine.

Jason Goldheimer and Ryan Thomas paced Delaware Valley with 11 points apiece while Jason Seipt and Wiggins finished with 10 each. Seipt also dished out a game-high seven assists.
