DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Isaiah Pinckney scored a game-high 29 points
and, in the process, moved into sixth place on the Delaware Valley
College all-time scoring list as the Aggies downed visiting Drew
University, 59-54, in a Freedom Conference game.
Delaware Valley improved to 5-17 overall and 3-8 in the conference
while the Rangers fell to 9-12 overall and 4-7 in the Freedom.
Pinckney scored 16 of his 29 in the first half. He upped his career
total to 1,382 points and moved past 1989 graduate Joe Butts (1,377
points). With three games remaining, Pinckney has chance to for
fifth place and 1977 graduate Dennis Pastucha's total (1,427).
The Aggies took the lead midway through the first half as they
went on a 7-0 run, including five by Pinckney, for a 22-15 advantage.
They eventually took a 33-30 lead into the intermission.
Delaware Valley used another 7-0 spurt, this time five by Eric
Lawton, to build its largest lead of the game at 10, 47-37, with
11:34 remaining. Drew responded with six straight but the Aggies
upped the advantage back to seven, 51-44, with 6:11 remaining.
However, the Rangers tied the game with a 7-0 spurt of their own,
including a three-point play by David Cramer that made it 51-51
with 3:45 left. Zack Van Dyke hit one free throw and Pinckney sank
a pair as Delaware Valley regained the lead for good with 2:33 to
go.
Cramer hit one free throw for a two-point game but a Brian Hillinski
free throw with 2:04 remaining and a Lawton layup with 41 seconds
left, gave Delaware Valley a 57-52 advantage. Chris Lopez made it
a one-possession ballgame as he connected on a pair of free throws
with 16 ticks to go, and Drew fouled Pinckney with no time elapsing.
Pinckney hit just one of two foul shots, but Drew turned the ball
over on its possession. Pinckney was fouled again with two seconds
left and he hit one shot for the 59-54 final.
In addition to Pinckney, Lawton hit double figures with 13 points.
Ryan Thomas came off the bench for seven points and five boards.
Cramer finished with 17 points to lead the Rangers. Bob Carella
and Bill Marano added 13 and 11 respectively.
