Delaware Valley 73, Arcadia University
70
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - Rich Schmidt's putback with 27.8 seconds remaining
lifted the Delaware Valley College men's basketball team to a 73-70
victory over visiting Arcadia University 73-70 in a non-conference
game.
The win improved the Aggies to 2-9 on the year with Schmidt hitting
the game-winning basket down the stretch in each contest. The sophomore
guard/forward scored on a layup with 8.4 seconds remaining in Delaware
Valley's 70-68 triumph over FDU-Florham back on December 4.
The Aggies trailed 67-61 with 6:09 remaining in the contest before
they ran off seven consecutive points to take a one-point lead with
3:32 to go. Schmidt had three points in the spurt. However, the
Knights (0-10) answered back two minutes later with Magen McNeil's
three-point play to take a 70-68 lead.
With under a minute to go, Delaware Valley freshman Isaiah Pinckney
stole a pass and went the length of the court for a basket and a
tied ballgame. Then, following a timeout, Mike Thornton stole an
Arcadia inbounds pass to give the Aggies another possession. Pinckney
drove to the basket and missed, but Schmidt was there for the follow-up
and the 72-70 advantage.
Stuart Slattery missed a 3-point attempt for the Knights and Schmidt
was fouled with 9.4 seconds to go. He missed the first attempt but
sank the second one for a three-point lead. Arcadia got a good look
for the potential game-tying 3-pointer, but Justin McCuen's attempt
from the right corner went off the rim. McCuen had hit four of his
previous six 3-point attempts - all in the second half.
Thornton and junior Erik Tegethoff paced Delaware Valley with 19
points apiece while Thornton also added nine rebounds and three
steals. Schmidt finished the day with 15 points while Pinckney added
10 points and four steals.
McNeil had a big afternoon for Arcadia as hit 13 of 19 shots from
the field and finished with 30 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks
in 38 minutes of action. McCuen added 14 points, seven rebounds
and seven assists while David Boettcher chipped in with 10 points
and seven boards.
