Men's Basketball - 2002-03 Season
Drew University 80, Delaware Valley 69
MADISON (NJ) - The Delaware Valley College men's basketball team
concluded its 2002-03 season with an 80-69 loss at MAC Freedom Conference
foe Drew University.
The Aggies, with no seniors and just one junior on the roster, went
5-19 overall and 0-14 in conference play. Drew ended its season
6-17, 4-10.
The Rangers scored the first 10 points of the game but Delaware
Valley rallied and were within two, 22-20, after a Josh Wurtz layup
with 9:04 left in the half. However, Drew scored the next eight
points and eventually took a 40-33 advantage into the intermission.
The Ranger lead was as many as 13 in the second stanza before the
Aggies chipped away at the advantage. A 10-4 run midway through
the half - with all 10 points coming from freshman Sean Smith -
made it 60-55 with 8:54 to go.
Delaware Valley pulled to within four on three separate occasions,
the last coming at 71-67 after Kevin Wright's layup with 3:28 remaining.
However, Drew iced the game by scoring nine points in a row.
Wurtz, a sophomore, paced the Aggies with 14 points and seven rebounds
off the bench. Smith finished with 12 points while fellow rookies
Dante Johnson and Tim Smink added seven points apiece. Johnston
also notched a team-best and career-high nine rebounds.
Dave Millstein and Mike Machin led Drew with 23 and 22 points respectively.
Machin paced all players with 12 rebounds and six blocked shots. |
