Delaware Valley College 4, Wilkes University 2 (Game 2)
KINGSTON (PA) - Kellen Jarrett and Zach Jakubowski smacked two-run
homers in the second game as Delaware Valley College salvaged a
crucial split of a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Wilkes University
on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels took the opener, 9-2, before
the Aggies came back with a 9-2 triumph in the nightcap.
With the twinblill split, Delaware Valley claimed the three-game
series with the defending conference champions as the Aggies posted
a 14-6 home victory in Friday's series opener. They are now 22-11
overall and 7-6 in Freedom play as they hold onto second place just
percentage points ahead of Arcadia University (8-7) and DeSales
University (8-7). Delaware Valley is two games behind Manhattanville
College for the top spot and it travels to New York for a makeup
doubleheader on Sunday.
The Aggies didn't waste any time in hitting the scoreboard in Saturday's
second game as Dylan Saldutti led off with a single and Jarrett
followed with his second home run of the season, a shot over the
left-center field fence.
The Colonels (16-12, 6-7) got one back in the bottom of the first
thanks to a sacrifice fly by Corey Helfrich. However, Delaware Valley
extended its lead to 4-1 in the third as Saldutti led off this stanza
with a double and, two batters later, Jakubowski hit a shot over
the left-center field fence as well. Jakubowski now has 19 extra-base
hits (seven doubles, eight triples, four home runs) and 44 RBIs
on the year.
That was all that freshman pitcher Brian Hafer would need as he
went the full seven innings and gave up two runs (Wilkes added a
tally in the fourth) and eight hits. He walked five and fanned three
as he upped his record to 2-3.
Saldutti finished 2-for-4 with the two runs scored while the round-trippers
were the lone hits of the game for both Jarrett and Jakubowski.
Brad Woznisky suffered the loss for the Colonels.
The opener saw the Colonels use the long ball to earn the win as
they put three over the outfield fence. They scored three times
in the third inning as Kyle Follweiler drilled a two-run shot and
Woznisky had a solo homer.
Wilkes padded its lead in the fifth as it scored six runs on six
hits. Woznisky delivered an RBI double while Randy Dengler knocked
in a pair with a single. Later in the inning, Billy Sisko hit a
three-run homer for a 9-0 advantage.
Delaware Valley scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings
for its lone tallies of the game. In the sixth, Jakubowski led off
with a single and later came around to score on a Brent Terlecky
RBI single. Jakubowski then recorded an RBI double in the seventh
as he finished 2-for-2 in the contest. Dan Metague went five-plus
innings on the mound and fell to 5-2.
Helfrich picked up the win for Wilkes as went six innings and permitted
just one run and five hits. Follweiler finished 3-for-4 with two
runs scored and two RBIs while Woznisky was 2-for-3 with two runs
and two RBIs.
