Valley College 1
CAMDEN (NJ) -- The Delaware Valley College baseball team opened
its 2008 season with a 6-1 loss to host Rutgers University-Camden
at Campbell's Field.
Scarlet Raptors' hurler Damien Wright was in command all the way
as he allowed only three singles, one walk and a pair of hit batsmen
in seven innings. He threw shutout ball until allowing an unearned
run in the seventh inning, and he struck out eight. Wright also
had a no hitter going until Aggie center fielder Kevin Weingart
reached on an infield single with two outs in the fourth inning.
Rutgers-Camden scored the only runs Wright needed with a pair of
unearned tallies in the second inning off Delaware Valley starter
Sean Tappan. The Scarlet Raptors opened the frame with a leadoff
triple to center by Rick Fougeray. Following a walk to Shawn Park,
Tappan nearly had a pickoff, but his throw was dropped at first
base as Park scampered down to second. After a shallow fly out,
a pair of walks forced home a run. Dean Straga then plated Park
with a ground out.
The Raptors added three more runs in the fourth following a one-out
infield single by Paul Painter. Painter advanced on a ground out
and on a single by Neill, on a topper out in front of the plate.
Neill stole second and Straga walked to load the bases. Steve Myers
then delivered a single in the shortstop hole, which deflected off
the glove of the Aggies' diving third baseman and plated two runs.
Kyle Ballay then singled to center, plating Straga.
The final Raptor run came in the fifth on a walk to Park and a
double to left-center by Matt Gabrielski.
Delaware Valley broke Wright's shutout bid with an unearned run
in the seventh. With one out, Brent Terlecky was hit by a pitch
and advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw by Wright. He
went to third on a single by Zach Jakubowski and scored on a sacrifice
fly to right field by Kyle Bobb.
Jakubowski was the lone player in the game with multiple hits,
going 2-for-4 off a trio of Raptor pitchers. Tappan worked the first
three innings and allowed one hit, three walks and two unearned
runs. He struck out one.
