Delaware Valley College 6, Penn State Harrisburg 2 (Game 2)
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - - Sean Tappan and Brian Hafer had strong outings
on the mound as Delaware Valley College swept a non-conference doubleheader
from visiting Penn State Harrisburg, 9-1 and 6-2.
The Aggies improved to 10-7 with the twinbill sweep and they will
return to action on Sunday afternoon (12:00 p.m.) when they host
Division II Chestnut Hill College for a doubleheader. The Nittany
Lions fell to 3-9.
In the opener, Tappan improved to 2-3 on the year as the sophomore
allowed an unearned run and five hits while striking out six over
five-plus innings of work. Justin Lucas came in relief and picked
up the final four outs.
Trailing 1-0, Delaware Valley got all the offense it needed in
the first as the Aggies scored three times on two hits and two walks.
Zach Jakubowski knocked in the first run with a ground out while
Kyle Bobb and Travis Roth added back-to-back RBI singles.
The Aggies added to the lead with a run in the second and two more
in the third. They then sealed the contest with three runs in the
fifth, including a two-run single by Jakubowski. Jakubowski finished
1-for-4 with three RBIs while Zach Chodur (3-for-3) and Kellen Jarrett
(2-for-4) had multiple-hit games.
Matt Umberger went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Derron Pellman went
2-for-4 for Penn State Harrisburg. Brandon Bennet took the loss
as he allowed six runs (five earned) and six hits over three innings.
The nightcap saw Hafer pick up his first collegiate win as the
freshman took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He finished with
two runs and two hits allowed while striking out four in five innings
of work.
Delaware Valley scored two times in the first on a sacrifice fly
by Jakubowski and an RBI single by Bobb. It added three more in
the second on an RBI double by Mike Thomas, a bases loaded walk
to Kevin Weingart and another RBI single by Bobb.
Pellman broke up Hafer's no-hit bid with a bloop single to lead
off the fifth. Later in the inning, a walk put two men on and they
both came around to score on a bloop double by Brett Harmony. That
made it 5-2 and the Nittany Lions put the first batter on with a
walk in the sixth. Freshman Zack Holm came in for Hafer and did
not allow a run or a hit the rest of the way, en route to his first
save.
The Aggies notched their final run in the sixth as Isgro's RBI
single brought home Chodur. Bobb finished a perfect 3-for-3 with
two RBIs while Isgro was 3-for-4. Dan Lamar started and took the
loss for Penn State Harrisburg.
