PURCHASE (NY) - Delaware Valley College fell into a three-way tie
for fourth place in the Freedom Conference as the Aggies dropped
a pair of games at Manhattanville College, 8-7 in nine innings and
3-1.
Delaware Valley, which started the day in second place and a chance
to move into the top spot, instead fell to 22-13 overall and 7-8
in the Freedom. The Aggies are tied with King's College and Wilkes
University for the final playoff spot heading into the final week
of the regular season.
Manhattanville leads the way with an 11-4 record in conference play
(21-10 overall) while Arcadia University and DeSales University
are tied for second with 8-7 league marks.
Next weekend's three-game series will feature match-ups between
the top six teams in the Freedom and a lot of scoreboard watching.
Delaware Valley will travel to Arcadia on Friday, April 25 for a
nine-inning contest and will then host the Knights for a twinbill
on Saturday. Manhattanville and Wilkes will meet while DeSales will
play King's.
The first game on Sunday saw Delaware Valley rally from a 4-2 deficit
and score four times in the top of the fifth to take a one-run lead.
Travis Roth and Zach Chodur had RBIs in the innings while two other
runs scored on a Valiant error.
The Aggies took the 6-5 lead into the seventh, but Manhattanville
forced extra innings as Jason Monofronte led off with a triple and
scored two batters later on an RBI single by A.J. Triano.
Delaware Valley went back in front in the ninth as Kevin Weingart
opened with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brent
Terlecky and scored on a throwing error. However, the Valiants came
back as Stephen Pinto reached on an error and then stole second.
After an out, Jeff Dunn tied the game with a double to right field.
Frank Furbacher then singled down the right field line to bring
home Dunn for the game-winning run.
Weingart went 3-for-3 and tied a school record with four runs scored
in the opener. Kellen Jarrett was 2-for-3 with a run batted in while
Roth was 1-for-4 and knocked in two runs.
In the second game, Steven Arroyo-Falcon held the Aggies to just
one unearned run and four hits. Manhattanville opened the scoring
in the third off a wild pitch, but Delaware Valley matched its in
the fourth as Terlecky was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a two-base
error and scored on starting pitcher Kyle Bobb's RBI single to center.
It remained a 1-1 ballgame until the sixth when the Valiants scored
two runs off of five hits. Dunn knocked in the eventual game winner
with an RBI double and then came around to score on an infield single
by Joe Gallace.
Delaware Valley threatened in the seventh as Roth led off with
a walk and Chodur singled to center. However, Arroyo-Falcon got
the Aggies to hit into a double play and then got another ground
out to end the game.
