DOYLESTOWN (PA) - - Manhattanville College moved into first place
in the Freedom Conference with Tuesday afternoon's 8-4 triumph at
Delaware Valley College.
The Valiants improved to 16-10 overall and 6-4 in the conference
as they moved percentage points ahead of idle Arcadia University
(7-5). The loss dropped the Aggies into a three-way tie for third
place with DeSales University and Wilkes University as they are
now 18-10 overall and 5-5 in the Freedom.
The two teams were finally able to get the first of a three-game
series in as inclement weather postponed it on two other occasions
(they will conclude the series with a doubleheader in Purchase,
New York on Sunday, April 20). They were each also coming off long
weekends and it showed as nine runs crossed the plate in the first
three innings for a 5-4 Manhattaville lead.
The Valiants scored two in the top of the first, including one
on an RBI single by Jason Monforte. Delaware Valley answered with
two in the bottom of the stanza, including a record-setting hit
by senior third baseman Zach Jakubowski. With one on and two outs,
Jakubowski ripped the 10th triple of his career to score Kyle Bobb
and become the school's all-time leader in the category. He then
scored on an RBI single by Mike Isgro.
The Aggies took a 4-2 lead in the second as Bobb knocked a run
in with a sacrifice fly and Isgro drew a bases-loaded walk. However,
Manhattanville took the lead for good in the third with three runs
off of three hits and one Delaware Valley error. A wild pitch brought
in one run while a sacrifice fly by Jeff Dunn tied the game. Joe
Gallace then delivered a run-scoring single for the lead.
The Valiants padded their lead in the fourth with an unearned run.
They then picked took advantage of more Aggie miscues for two more
runs in the ninth and an 8-4 final.
Steven Arroyo-Falcon improved to 2-2 on the year as he went six
innings and allowed four runs and 10 hits. John Kain did not allow
a hit and fanned five over the final three innings for his first
save. Pinto finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Dunn knocked
in a pair of runs.
Jakubowski had a 3-for-4, one RBI afternoon for Delaware Valley
while Isgro went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Brian Hafer lasted three
innings and took the loss while Chris Albaugh did not allow an earned
run in five-plus innings of work out of the bullpen.
