DOYLESTOWN (PA) - - Senior third baseman Zach Jakubowski hit a school-record
three triples in the first game and smacked a home run in the nightcap
to lead Delaware Valley College to a non-conference doubleheader
sweep of visiting Lancaster Bible College, 7-6 and 12-0.
Jakubowski finished the day a perfect 5-for-5 with the four extra-base
hits, four runs scored and three RBIs. The opener saw him notch
triples in the third, fifth and sixth innings set a Delaware Valley
single-game mark and tie nine others for the third-highest, single-game
total in NCAA Division III history (Mike Czarnecki of Dubuque and
Mike Sokoloski of Westfield State hold the record with four triples).
Jakubowski, who yesterday set the school's career mark in triples,
upped his total to 13 while his seven three-baggers on the season
is one shy of tying that record as well.
Jakubowski's third triple of the game knocked in the second run
of the sixth inning and upped the Aggie lead to 6-2. Mike Isgro
then drew a walk and both he and Jakubowski executed a double steal
for the team's seventh run of the contest.
Delaware Valley (20-10) needed all seven as the Chargers (8-12)
rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh and put the tying
run on second base with just one out in the inning. However, Aggie
reliever Kellen Jarrett got the final two batters for his first
save of the season.
Kyle Bobb went the first four innings and improved to 3-0 as he
allowed just one unearned run and three hits while striking out
nine. Bobby Oakes and Dylan Saldutti each went 2-for-3 with Oakes
producing a double and two runs scored.
The second game saw Delaware Valley notch 11 hits and score in
each of the six innings that it came up to bat. Jakubowski kept
the hot bat going as, up 3-0, he began a five-run fifth inning with
a solo home run deep over the left field fence. Anthony Perry and
Matt Giberson had RBI doubles in the stanza while Jarrett drove
home two runs with a single.
Jakubowski led off the fourth inning as well and singled for his
fifth hit of the day. He then scored on a fielder's choice to officially
end his afternoon.
Giberson went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs.
Jarrett and Mike Thomas combined to score five runs with Jarrett
also finishing with his two RBIs in the fifth. Four pitched combined
for a six-hit shutout with Zack Holm going the first four innings
for his second win of the season.
