King's College 2, Delaware Valley College 0 (Game 2)
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - - Delaware Valley College's Mike Isgro and King's
College's Daniel Jenkins each hurled complete-game shutouts as the
two teams split a Freedom Conference doubleheader on Monday. The
Aggies took the opener, 4-0, before suffering a 2-0 setback in the
second game.
The twinbill was the first at home for Delaware Valley following
two road games and a 10-game schedule on its Spring Break trip to
Florida. The split moved the Aggies to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the
conference while the Monarchs saw their record go to 6-7 and 1-3.
The two teams will complete the three-game series with a nine-inning
contest in Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday (3:30 p.m).
The first game saw Isgro improve to 3-0 on the season, including
his second shutout of the year. He allowed one walk and eight hits,
but got out of jams all afternoon as King's left eight runners on
base. Isgro finished the day with eight strikeouts to give him 27
in 22 innings of work this season.
It was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Brent Terlecky
reached on a fielder's choice and Kellen Jarrett drew a walk. The
two advanced a base on as Joel Porambo grounded to second for the
second out of the inning. Kyle Bobb stepped to the plate and the
senior first baseman drilled a single into left field to bring home
both runners and give Delaware Valley a 2-0 lead.
King's threatened in the top of the fifth as Phil Moskowitz led
off with a single and, following an out, Matt Livoy reached on a
hit and Jon Vernarchick walked to load the bases. However, Isgro
caught cleanup batter Pat McCoy looking at a third strike and then
fanned Gracjan Kraszewski to end the inning. Isgro then allowed
just one base runner over the final two stanzas.
The Aggies got their remaining runs in the bottom of the fifth
as a Kevin Weingart drive to right field was lost in the sun for
a double, Zach Jakubowski reached on an error and Travis Roth loaded
the bases with a single. Terlecky grounded out to short, but Weingart
scored on the play for a 3-0 lead and Jarrett followed with a single
to bring home Jakubowski.
Roth was the lone Aggie to have a multiple-hit game in the opener
as he went 2-for-4. J.R. Graver (2-for-4) and Vernarchick (2-for-2)
paced the King's offense. Livoy took the loss for the Monarchs despite
allowing just two earned runs and seven hits over five-plus innings.
The nightcap belonged to Jenkins (2-0) as the sophomore gave up
just one walk and two hits while fanning five. King's managed just
four runs off Delaware Valley starter Sean Tappan, but scratched
out runs in the first and sixth innings for the win.
In the first, Graver led off with a walk and moved to third on
a wild pitch and a ground out. He then scored as Tappan could not
cleanly field a comebacker by Vernarchick for a 1-0 lead. In the
sixth, McGlynn doubled to right-center and Matt Unger followed with
a single that brought home pinch-runner Mike Fignar.
Delaware Valley had chances in the fourth and seventh, but Jenkins
held them at bay each time. The Aggies put runners on second and
third with just one out, but a fly out by Isgro and a ground out
by Jarrett ended the inning. Then in the seventh, back-to-back errors
by the Monarchs put the tying runs on base with one out. However,
Jenkins fanned pinch-hitter Anthony Perry and got pinch-hitter Bobby
Oakes to ground out to short to wrap up the game.
