FDU-Florham 2, Delaware Valley College 1 (Game 2)
DOYLESTOWN (PA) - - Strong pitching by both Delaware Valley College
and FDU-Florham resulted in 2-1 scores as the two teams split a
Freedom Conference doubleheader on Sunday. The Aggies took the opener
with FDU-Florham bouncing back in the nightcap.
The split gave Delaware Valley two wins in the three-game series
with the Devils as it improved to 18-9 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
FDU-Florham saw its record move to 11-14 overall and 5-8 in league
action.
The opener saw the Aggies take advantage of a pair of Devils miscues
in the bottom of the seventh to bring home the winning run. With
two outs and a runner on first, an error at shortstop allowed the
potential winning run to move into scoring position and keep the
inning alive. Kyle Bobb then lofted a fly ball to left field and
it looked like the game was headed to extra innings. However, the
ball was dropped for an error and Dylan Saldutti crossed home plate
to give Delaware Valley the victory.
The Aggies scored a run in the third inning on an RBI single by
Bobb and it was matched in the sixth as Dan Bellino delivered a
two-out, run-scoring single.
Dan Metague improved to 5-1 on the season as the senior allowed
just one run and three hits while striking out four. Ryan Flannery
took the loss for the Devils despite allowing just two runs (one
earned) and six hits in six-plus innings of work. He walked one
and fanned five.
The nightcap saw Delaware Valley's Sean Tappan and FDU-Florham's
Brandon Smith have a similar duel on the mound. Smith eventually
picked up the win as he went six-plus innings and allowed one run
and six hits while fanning seven. Tappan gave up just two runs and
struck out six in six innings, but suffered the loss.
All of the scoring took place in the second inning as, in the top
of the stanza, both Bill Smith and Dan Pregno drilled RBI doubles
to right field. The Aggies cut that lead in half on a two-out, RBI
single to right by Travis Roth.
Delaware Valley threatened in the seventh as Brent Terlecky reached
on an error and pinch-runner Matt Giberson moved up to second on
a sacrifice bunt by Roth. However, Bill Buckless came out of the
bullpen for the Devils and got a pop up and a ground out to notch
his second save of the season.
Saldutti went 3-for-4 while Zach Jakubowski was 2-for-3 as they
had five of the Aggies' six hits. Pregno was 3-for-4 with a pair
of doubles and an RBI. Hanna also had three hits for FDU-Florham,
including a double.
