DOYLESTOWN (PA) - - Delaware Valley scored five times in the sixth
inning to break a 2-2 stalemate and the host Aggies went on to a
9-3 triumph over DeSales University in a Freedom Conference game.
The win was the seventh in the last game for Delaware Valley, including
two of three over the Bulldogs, as it improved to 15-8 overall and
3-3 in the conference. DeSales fell to 12-12 overall and 5-4 in
the Freedom.
In the sixth, Zach Jakubowski and Mike Isgro reached on back-to-back
singles, but a pop up followed for the second out of the inning,
The Bulldogs went to their bullpen and Brent Terlecky drew a walk
to load the bases. Travis Roth then drew a walk of his own to plate
Jakubowski for a 3-2 lead.
Freshman Zach Chodur came to the plate and the number nine batter
delivered with a single to left field that brought home both Isgro
and Terlecky for a 5-2 advantage. Dylan Saldutti then reached on
an error to reload the bases. Kellen Jarrett smoked one up the middle
that was stopped in the infield, but there was no play at any base
and Roth scored. The ball was then tossed over second base on a
late attempt to make a play and Chodur crossed the plate for a five-run
inning and a 7-2 lead.
DeSales got one back in the seventh as pinch-hitter Zac Hess notched
an RBI single. With two runners on and two outs, Aggie reliever
Brian Hafer entered the game and he got Carson Slonaker to fly out
to left to end the threat.
Delaware Valley then put the contest away in the bottom of the
eighth as Kyle Bobb ripped an RBI double and Jakubowski knocked
in a run with a sacrifice fly for a 9-3 score.
The Aggies got their first run of the game off a passed ball in
the first inning. It remained a 1-0 ballgame until the fifth when
an RBI ground out by Tim Fiorito and an RBI double by Evan Zechman
gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. Delaware Valley tied it in the bottom
of the stanza as Saldutti legged out an infield hit that scored
Terlecky. The Aggies then followed with the big sixth inning and
the victory.
Dan Metague improved to 4-1 on the year as the senior allowed three
runs and seven hits in six-plus innings of work. Hafer picked up
his first collegiate save with a scoreless, two-plus innings of
work. Bobb, Jakubowski and Jarrett had two hits apiece while Chodur
was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Doc Neiman was the lone Bulldog to have a multiple-hit game as
he went 2-for-4. Mike Newland started and took the loss as he allowed
four runs (three earned) and seven hits in five-plus innings.
