A 1992 graduate of Delaware Valley College and a member of its
Athletic Hall of Fame, Bob Altieri has produced a 158-132 record
and five trips to the postseason in his eight years as head coach..
Altieri was promoted to head coach in 2000 following a six-year
stint as an assistant. Despite losing the team's top three pitchers
to graduation in '99, Altieri directed the Aggies to a 23-16 record
and earned trips to both the Middle Atlantic Conference and Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) playoffs. He was named the MAC-Freedom
Coach of the Year for his efforts.
The
2001 edition of the Aggies compiled the best 17-game start in program history
with a 15-2 mark and right fielder Tony DeLude was named the conference's Most
Valuable Player. DeLude repeated as conference MVP in 2002 and Rich Bayachek was
named the Pitcher of the Year as the team won 24 games, reached the conference
championship game and was selected for the ECAC playoffs. In 2003, Delaware
Valley qualified for the Freedom Conference playoffs and had the conference MVP
for the fifth time in the last six years as first baseman Mark Roth earned the
accolade. Roth was later named a second team All-American.
The Aggies took first place honors in the Freedom Conference during
the regular season and was selected to host the ECAC Southern Region
Championships in 2004. The team won both ECAC contests to capture
the title and finish 27-13. Left fielder Brandon McCabe was named
a third team All-American after the season.
Altieri served as
Frank Wolfgang's right-hand man from 1994 to 1999, and played a major role as
the Aggies became a regional power. They set a school record for victories in
three straight seasons, culminating with 31 wins in 1999. That team won the ECAC
South Region Championship while the '98 squad captured the MAC-Freedom regular-season
title and reached the MAC championship game. Altieri starred on the Delaware
Valley baseball diamond from 1989 to 1992 and was inducted into the school's Hall
of Fame five years later. He was a four-time MAC-Northern Division all-star and
team MVP, and posted numerous school records including an all-time batting average
of .418 (since broken).
Altieri still holds a share of a NCAA Division III record with
four doubles in a game against Ursinus College in 1990. He graduated
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business.
