Wilkes University 3, Delaware Valley
College 2
KINGSTON (PA) - Wilkes University scored all of its runs in the
first two innings and used some solid pitching to post a 3-2 Freedom
Conference baseball win over visiting Delaware Valley College.
The Colonels, who are slated to conclude their three-game series
against the Aggies with a doubleheader in Doylestown on Saturday
(1:00 p.m.) upped heir overall record to 13-9 and moved their conference
mark to 5-7 with the win. Delaware Valley saw its overall record
fall to 4-11 and its conference record slide to 0-7.
Delaware Valley took a 1-0 lead with a single run in the top of
the first. Steve Kinney laced a single and Zach Jakubowski walked
to place two runners on with two outs. Kyle Bobb followed with a
double down the third base line that easily scored Kinney. However,
Jakubowski also attempted to score and was gunned down at the plate.
Wilkes countered with a run of its half of the first as Mike McAndrew
led off with a single and, one out later, Kyle Follweiler tripled
to right-center field to score McAndrew and tie the game.
The Colonels scored a pair of runs in the second to take a lead
they would never relinquish. A walk and two singles loaded the bases
with no outs. Delaware Valley starter Dave Keeler then issued a
base on balls to Eric Wetzel to force home a run and put Wilkes
ahead 2-1. After McAndrew flew out, Wilkes starting pitcher Corey
Helfrich grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Justin Popovich
to score and give the Colonels a 3-1 advantage.
The Aggies closed to within 3-2 in the eighth when freshman Brent
Terlecky cracked his first collegiate home run, a solo shot. However,
Follweiler came on in the ninth and retired all three Delaware Valley
hitters in order to close out the win and garner his third save
of the season.
Helfrich was the winning pitcher as went 6.2 innings and allowed
five hits and one run. McAndrew was the only two-time hitter in
the game, finishing with a pair of singles for the Colonels.
Delaware Valley had six hits in the contest, including Terlecky's
homer and doubles by Bobb and Jakubowski. Keeler suffered the loss
as he went six innings and allowed three runs and eight hits.
