Delaware Valley 9, Wilkes University 7 (Game 1)

KINGSTON (PA) - Delaware Valley College and host Wilkes Universty split a Freedom Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Artillery Park. In the opener, the Aggies held off a late Colonels rally to earn a 9-7 win while Wilkes came back to take the nightcap, 8-3.

Wilkes claimed two out of three games during their series with Delaware Valley to improve to 5-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Aggies see their marks fall to 5-4 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

In game one, Delaware Valley opened with four runs in the first inning, including a two-run double by Travis Roth and George Higginson's RBI single. The Aggies made it 5-0 in the fourth as Sean Meister walked, stole second and came around to score on a single by Mike Gargiulo.

Delaware Valley upped the lead to 9-0 in the top of the sixth with four runs on one key hit, three walks and one Wilkes error. The hit came was a bases-clearing single by Tim Trotman with two outs in the inning.

Wilkes rallied in the bottom of the inning for seven runs on four hits and a pair of Aggie errors, but Delaware Valley reliever Joe Cione escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play. The Colonels put the tying runs on base in the seventh but Cione got Justin Popovich to fly to left to end the game for his second save of the year. Mick Bigwood picked up the win as he allowed seven runs (four earned) on three hitss while fanning three.

In the nightcap the Colonels blew open 4-3 game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. After consecutive singles by Derek Sheruda and Imdorf, Turel stepped to the plate in an obvious bunt situation. He surprised the Aggies by squaring around for a bunt to move the defense out of position and then swinging away driving a triple down the right field line. Sheruda and Imdorf scored on the play, which sparked the big inning.
