Delaware Valley 14, University of Scranton 5 (Game 2)
SCRANTON (PA) - It was certainly a tale of two different games
for Delaware Valley College as the Aggies split a Freedom Conference
doubleheader at The University of Scranton on Sunday afternoon.
Delaware Valley was no-hit in the first game and lost 7-0, but
responded with 14 runs and 15 hits in a 14-5 triumph in game two.
The Aggies improved to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play while
the Royals are now 4-7 and 1-2.
Steve Urbanovich held Delaware Valley in check in the opener as
he walked just two batters and struck out six en route to his no-hitter.
The Aggies then hurt themselves in the field as they committed five
errors in the fourth inning as Scranton scored five times for a
6-0 advantage. Mick Bigwood fell to 3-1 on the year despite allowing
just one earned run and four hits in four innings of work.
However, the Delaware Valley offense, which entered the three-game
series with a .383 team batting average, bounced back in the nightcap.
The Aggies scored three times in the first inning and led 6-2 going
into the top of the fifth.
Delaware Valley then scored seven times in the fifth, including
a grand slam home run by Bret Thiel to right-center field, for a
13-2 lead. It was the junior's first collegiate home run and his
only hit of the afternoon.
Freshman A.J. DeNardo and sophomore Steve Orman each went 3-for-5
in the game. Orman also added two runs scored and three RBIs. Senior
Kyle Knouse went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs while
sophomore Sean Meister went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Freshman pitcher Dave Keeler improved to 2-0 on the season as he
allowed four runs over six innings and struck out three. |
