Biology
You are living in the age that will see enormous breakthroughs in molecular biology, on-demand human genome sequences, and long-elusive cures to diseases that have plagued mankind and the crops and animals we care for. While we have worked to decode the secrets of biology for centuries, our understanding of basic biological phenomena is growing exponentially thanks to the power of new technologies coupled with increased computational power.
We can now peer into the secret machinery of cells and organ systems as never seen before. We have a greater understanding of the life history of birds and possess a wider appreciation for the ecological impacts of native and invasive invertebrates. And we now have improved insights related to the unique nature of interactions between plants, animals and fungi – all within the framework created by evolution.
Want to be a part of your generation's moon landing?
Join the Department of Biology to arm yourself with the knowledge needed to participate. The department has faculty members versed in anatomy, physiology, ecology, ornithology, cell and tissue biology, botany, molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, genomics, computational biology, freshwater ecosystems, entomology, systematics and an ever-growing list of new endeavors.
We look forward to teaching, listening and working with you on a number of research opportunities in progress or of your design. We have the experience, perspective and passion to prepare you for a career in research, medicine, veterinary science, biotechnology or other industrial applications. We are ready to work with you to solve the greatest problems of our time.
We welcome you to the work ahead.
