What are the requirements for admission to the program?

Many students have undergraduate degrees in social science or human service related fields (i.e., psychology, counseling or social work); however, students from diverse academic backgrounds with an interest in counseling psychology are invited to apply.  Students must have completed four undergraduate psychology classes with a grade of “B” or better and submit three letters of recommendation, a 500 word personal statement, three letters of recommendation from professors and/or work supervisors, and a resume or curriculum vitae. Applicants are encouraged to highlight any salient work experience. Students with an undergraduate cumulative GPA below 3.0 must submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam or the Millers Analogies Test.

What is the cohort model?

Applicants are accepted into a cohort that forms once each academic year. Coursework begins during the fall semester. Students will move through most of their core courses with the same students each semester and develop mentoring relationships with faculty. This model allows students to get to know one another, develop strong working relationships and learn in a collaborative fashion.

How many classes do students take each semester?

The masters in counseling psychology program is a full-time graduate program that takes approximately 2 to 3 years to complete, depending on the track selected (48 credit or 60 credit). Students will generally take 3 classes (9 credits) during the fall & spring semesters and 2 classes (6 credits) during the summer semesters.

Can I work and still attend graduate school?

Yes, some students work while also taking 2-3 classes per semester. Classes are offered Monday-Thursday evenings starting after 4:30 pm. Some theory-based classes may be offered in a hybrid course format. A hybrid course involves in-person meetings and some online work to allow for increased flexibility in scheduling. Students will complete a 100-hour practicum during the first year and a 600-hour internship during the second year or third year.

What’s the application deadline?

Applications should be submitted by April 1 for priority consideration; however, applications submitted after the deadline may still be considered.
